European
Scrambling Systems - The Black Book by John
McCormac. 1996 ISBN 1 873556 22 5 by Waterford
University Press. Now
in Edition 5, it gives a practical view of the
various attacks on satellite systems. A good
example of poor security design, being followed
by years of successive improvement. Get it right
from the start is the message!

The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford
Stoll. 1989 ISBN 0 370 31433 6 by Bodley Head. The original "hacking"
story book about UNIX, and amazingly, with some
modern variations, it can still be done. Also
describes some of Packet Data Network side, and
the involvement of German and US Agencies. Good
value and a good read.

Enigma-
The Battle for the Code by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore.
2000 Wiedenfeld & Nicholson; ISBN: 029784251X. The latest book on the ENIGMA cipher
machine, very well researched with many
interviews from participants. Well worth a read,
especially as an antidote to U571 (the film which
takes some liberties with history) for the real
facts!

The Emporer's Codes by The
Emporer's Codes Michael Smith. September 2000
Bantam Press; ISBN: 0593046412. This book looks
at the breaking of the Japanese codes, from a
British perspective. The author also wrote
Station X. It draws from various sources, and
many interviews. Not much technical insight, but
a good read including the lack of co-operation
between the allies!
